A government has a responsibility to inform its citizens. And we need leadership that recognizes thorough and consistent communication as a pillar of good government.
Sadly, what we’ve seen is leadership that communicates only in an emergency, not at all, or only when it benefits them.
Community members have a right to know what is happening, when it’s happening, where it’s happening, and how much it’s going to cost!
Here are my ideas to keep Council honest, and to ensure we are open with our people:
- Communication – As Chief I will reintroduce robust and thorough communications. We will utilize the best methods available to us including social media and websites, as well as traditional methods for our kehtayak. Communication will be regular, consistent, and informative.
- Council Meetings – Council meetings will be webcast for membership to view the proceedings; minutes of Council meetings will be posted on the Band website to ensure accountability and transparency in the decision-making process;
- Member’s Assemblies – To ensure accountability and sufficient reporting to the membership on the progress of programs and services, we will meet regularly with the membership – urban and on-reserve – to inform them of governance priorities, and to keep community members informed.
- Authorities, Boards, and Committees (ABC) – we will employ the previously-used open and accessible Annual General Meeting format to nominate, and select members to do the tremendously important work of community Authorities, Boards, and Committees. This work is too important to be delayed and far too important for community members not to be involved in the process. This would apply to ALL Nation operated Authorities, Board, and Committees.
- Virtual Reports – as a Council, we will conduct regular virtual sessions to update the membership on the progress of programs and services. If the global COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we have the tools necessary to keep our membership informed.
