Kevin Seesequasis, CD is the Community & Tourism Development Officer for the Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation and has been responsible for the implementation of several community priorities including our Regional Tourism Strategy, the Community Development Wrap Around Initiative, and Waspâwênamâk Nêhiyawêwin – our Cree language revitalization initiative.
Kevin was previously elected to the Council of the Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation and served in that role from 2014 to 2020. During his 6 years on Council, he was responsible for:
- Community Development
- Emergency Management
- Communications
- Two-Spirit/LBGTQ & Veterans
In 2009, Kevin was appointed as a Team Leader with the Government of Alberta (Human Resources) where he worked in concert with Indigenous individuals and organizations to develop the “Effective Aboriginal Recruiting and Retention Strategy” to promote effective recruiting and retention practices of Indigenous people within the Government of Alberta. While studying in Edmonton, he served as the President of the Aboriginal Students’ Association of Grant MacEwan University and is also an out-and-proud, founding member of “InQueeries”- MacEwan’s LGBTQ-S Alliance. In the spring of 2016, he organized the first-ever Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation Two-Spirit Pride festival – the first of it’s kind held on a First Nation in Saskatchewan; and in 2019, Kevin, along with his friends, organized the “Revitalizing the Circle” – Two-Spirit Powwow – the first time a Two-Spirit Powwow was held on a First Nation in Canada.
Kevin served two years on the National Board of Directors of the Liberal Party of Canada and was the National Co-Chair of the party’s Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission from 2014-2016. His work on the National Board of the party assisted in electing a majority Liberal government in 2015 and the unprecedented election of 9 Indigenous Members of Parliament – the most ever in Canadian history!
In 2015, Kevin retired as a Captain in the Canadian Forces. He was actively involved in the Canadian Cadet Organizations where he worked to develop the leadership potential in youth. Kevin was instrumental in launching the Military Co-Operative Program at the Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation – the first of its kind in Canada! In partnership with the North Saskatchewan Regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces, 14 youth enrolled in the program in February of 2017 and began the Basic Military Qualification training course.
Kevin is a nerd and resides with his kohkum Therese and his golden retriever Toot. Kevin is a recipient of the CBC Future40 Award, and the Canadian Forces Decoration recognizing 12+ years of service. Kevin enjoys reading about leadership and politics.
